Andrey Quintana Lamas

(Cuba, 1984)

On his artwork

Painting has been Andrey Quintana's expressive medium par excellence, although the Cuban artist also experiments with other languages. From the pictorial surface, he dismantles the forms of control that fix the movement of individuals in their social space, that dictate their possibilities of being, restricting and monopolizing it. There is a subtle critique of the alienation to which their bodies and existences are subjected, the numbness produced by the structures of standardisation and domination of social systems.

This homogenisation of the individual within the collective is registered through visuality and the expressive use of colour. Socialist ideology, the commodification of life, consumer society and capitalism could be allusions to which his work refers. In addition to the usual techniques, the artist uses unconventional pictorial resources, bullet shells, among others, with which he makes painting an experience that conveys critical provocation. Within the different themes raised in his work, one can find war, the assassination of political leaders, as well as other concerns whose meanings he expands through art.
