Florent Mundele
(Congo)
On his artwork
Florent Mundele's paintings show the paradoxical worlds of the characters he portrays in his canvases. The young Congolese artist captures his everyday surroundings, the identity of his people in a particular way. He records the subjects in dissimilar postures and highlights their outfit with bright colours, while replacing their skins with bees. The representation of corporeality through swarming contrasts with the universe of bright, contemporary everyday objects and accessories.
The bodies made through insects, while mouths and eyes hold joyful and sometimes naïve gestures, elaborate an image of their complex and hopeful lives. They dwell among customs and routines that intertwine practices of tradition, collective histories, and social fabrics whilst throwing them into discontinuous experiences.
The detailed treatment of the bees and the broad surfaces of colour of the costumes and accessories they wear, deepen a narrative about their existences, about their alterities and hybrid bodies. The paintings capture their human universes and expectations, their everyday politics and life strategies through surreal metaphors.
